Online Presence and the Search Engines

Let’s talk about Online Presence. As discussed in the preceding post, it is all about your popularity to your target market. So having a web site is just the start of your online venture. It does not end there. You must employ strategies to bring visitors to your site. These visitors are also known as the traffic, which is the lifeblood of a web site.

One of the best ways to lead traffic to your web site is through the Search Engines. When somebody searches for something, he or she will enter the word or group of words that describe it through the search engine – could be Google, Yahoo, Bing and others. Then the search engine will give a list of web sites where the person could find the information he or she is looking for.

These words that are being submitted to the search engines for querying are called keywords or key phrases. Once entered, the search engines will be checking the web sites in their records and give a list of them. This gives the option to go to the sites where one may get what he or she needs.

This is basically how the search engines work. If your web site is one of those on top of the list that the search engine provides (called the Search Engine Results Page or SERP), people searching for topics related to your site will definitely visit yours. Unfortunately, people researching would not go to the next page of the SERPs so traffic would not be directed your site that much if it is listed on the next page of the list.

Now the question is, how can your web site be listed on the first page of the SERPs and also on top of the list?
